Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus - Symptoms, Treatment and Management

"Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that results in destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas." Ok, now that the terminology is out of the way, lets take a look at this killer disease.

What are some of the symptoms?

Type 1 diabetes has some of the same symptoms as type 2 diabetes. That is why it is sometimes confused with type 2. They are:

Doctors test for type 1 diabetes using the C-peptide assay ( this measures your bodys' production of insulin. )

How do you treat type 1 diabetes mellitus?

Treatment includes not only insulin injections and monitoring your blood sugar, but eating right and regular exercise. Pancreas transplant is the only known potential cure for those with type 1 diabetes.

How can I manage my diabetes?

* Schedule a physical yearly

The next tip is to stay active throughout the day. Most people forget that going to the gym is just a small part of your day. But if you make sure to take little walks or to do little chores throughout the day you'll actually burn more calories. I once lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks just by doing simple things around the house. So working out is important but you don't have to stress out right away about doing it.

Monologues give voice to women's issues

Shawnee students, faculty as well as members of the community packed into the Kahl Theatre for Shawnee's third annual presentation of the play. "The Vagina Monologues" helps raise funds for the global movement to end violence against women and girls, the day on which it is presented having become known as "V-day."

"It's good to be involved with a project that raises awareness about violence against women," narrator Stephanie Bush said.

This year's cast included students, faculty, and alumni. Twenty-one women participated in this year's event over the course of 18 scenes, including the introduction.

A complex play, It consists of actual monologues from women from all over the world, talking about their vaginas. The subjects discussed differ greatly from scene to scene. They range from the natural beauty of hair ("Hair") to a woman who discovers she is beautiful because she met a man obsessed with the anatomy of vaginas ("Because He Liked to Look at it") to the exploitation of women and girls in prison camps ("Say It").

The tone of each scene differs as well. The comical "My Angry Vagina," explained why her vagina was "pissed off" to the call to have women take back a word that many consider derogatory in "Reclaiming Cunt." The play finished with the heart wrenching "Baptized" which described how soldiers in the Congo were raping young girls and women because they are prisoners of an ongoing conflict that has been occurring since 1996.

"My favorite part was the chant where the negative connotation of cunt was taken away," said Derek Dawson, a senior majoring in English.

To date, V-Day has raised over $60 million and educated countless people on issues involving violence against women and efforts to end it.

All of the proceeds from this year's event went to the Southern Ohio Shelter (S.O.S.), a non-profit domestic violence agency that primarily serves the residents of Scioto County.

Each year V-Day wishes to increase awareness of a specific group of women who are resisting violence with courage and wisdom. This year focused on the women and girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo where rape is used as a weapon of war.

Save on fitness

You aren't cheap, just frugal. You want to stay slim, but your finances are a tad too lean. You seek to maintain your health, but your bank account is lower than Michael Phelps' pulse rate. What to do?


Follow these 15 ways to save on health and fitness.

1. Go generic

Use generic prescription and over-the-counter drugs when possible. The Consumer Reports National Research Center says generics are as safe and effective as name brands.

2. Step outside

Skip the treadmill and the high health-club fees. Go outside and run or walk.

3. Sock it to 'em

Can't afford fancy gloves to keep your hands warm? Find your warmest pair of socks and put them on your hands before a run.

4. Limit ER visits

Stay out of emergency rooms. If you have an ailment that can wait until morning, let it wait. You'll literally save thousands.

5. Flex your options

Do biceps curls with milk jugs and heavier cans as you're putting away the groceries. They weigh about the same as health-club barbells.

6. Flex your spending, too

If your company offers a flexible-spending-account option for health care, take it. These are pretax funds squirreled away in an account to pay for office visits, prescriptions and the like. It's a use-it-or-lose-it plan, so you must estimate how much money to set aside for a year. Err on the low side, lest your December be all about finding ways to spend health-care money.

7. Brace yourself

Buy your own crutches and braces for your appendages. The ones hospitals supply are pricey.

Buy a yoga video (Rodney Yee's "Power Yoga" can be had for $8.99 on amazon.com) instead of paying $15 for every yoga class.

9. Sample before buying

When your doctor says you need to take a new drug, ask her or him for free samples. They usually have a stash on hand.

If you have no insurance and pay cash for your doctor's bill at the time of the appointment, ask if the office gives a discount. Many practices will give cash-paying customers a deal, because they don't have to deal with the insurance hassles.

Get your dental work done at a dental school. But be prepared for a long appointment. These are dental pros-in-training, after all.

12. Mind your peas and carrots

Forget those fancy freezable ice bags pro athletes use. If you've got a sprained ankle or a swollen knee, put a bag of frozen peas on it.

Try mail-order pharmacies for your prescription drugs. Buying in bulk is cheaper. (Caveat: Do it only for prescriptions you routinely take.)

14. Factor in the tax facts

Know your tax tips. The IRS allows you to write off the amount by which your medical-care expenses for the year exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income.

Eat out less and eat smaller portions. It saves money and shrinks your waistline.

7 tips to improve your health

If improving your health is at the top of your to-do list for 2009, as it is for many of us, check out this advice from Suzanne Carere, a registered dietitian, and Steve Roest, the president and owner of Toronto's Fitness Institute.

1. Don't eat carbohydrates past 7 p.m.

If you follow this one piece of advice and change nothing else about your health and fitness routine, Carere guarantees you'll lose five pounds within a month-and-a-half.
Why? The body's metabolism revs higher during the day, she says
"As we get closer to bedtime, metabolism slows down. It's at that time of night that we're not going to burn off as many calories as we normally would."

Carbs are not needed as the body prepares for sleep because their sole purpose is to provide energy, which happens when they turn into sugar in the bloodstream, says Carere.

When that energy isn't needed, it's stored as fat.

So, consume your grains, fruits and beans during the day, and cut them out at night.

Carere says it's not as important to limit protein and fat intake past 7 p.m. (a time that she uses as a general guideline) because those foods have various functions in the body, such as muscle repair and skin repair, respectively.

If you're hungry at night, she suggests snacking on veggies and low-fat dip, broth-based soups and sugar-free yogurt.

2. Start your day with a high-carb breakfast

If you cut carbs at night, you'll wake up ravenous. And that's a good thing, says Carere.

"It's called breakfast for a reason. You're breaking the fast. Have a high-carb breakfast, because you want your metabolism to rev as high as it possibly can throughout the day."

A good option is whole-wheat toast or a high-fibre cereal, one with at least 10-per-cent fibre. For example, if your cereal serving has 30 grams of carbs in it, it should contain at least three grams of fibre, she says.

And don't be turned off by a cereal if it has some sugar.

"As long as there's fibre present, it will slow down how quickly the sugar converts to your bloodstream," Carere says.

Add other food groups, too.

"The best thing for breakfast is to try to eat at least three out of four of the food groups so it will last you longer."

3. Rate your foods

Look at every food on a scale of one to five.

On Carere's scale, one means you really couldn't care less about putting the food in your mouth; five means you're going to enjoy every single molecule.

"If it's a three or less on the scale, I won't eat it," she says. "(When you start rating your food), you'll find that most of the time it's not worth the calories for your body."

4. Stop cravings in their tracks

No one is immune to the call of a bag of chocolate chip cookies or that half-eaten pint of Ben and Jerry's in the freezer. But some people know how to ignore the call better than others.

Carere suggests two strategies to add to your nutrition arsenal that should help you beat the cravings that so often leave you feeling guilty and stuffed.
